Beauty and Function: The Art and Craft of Quilts – Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Breton Quilters Guild

The Breton Quilters Guild is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special exhibit at the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design.  The exhibit collects a sample of the work the Guild has produced over the years and gives audiences an introduction to the intricacies of traditional quilt-work.

Beauty and Function opens January 18, 2010 with a reception set to take place Thursday, January 21 from 4-6pm. Members of the Guild will be on hand offering demonstrations of quilting techniques and providing insight into the projects and history of the Breton Quilters.

The Breton Quilters Guild is a group of enthusiastic quilt makers who meet most Mondays at the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design from September to June. They work to preserve the art and heritage of quilt making. This busy group always has a project on the frame, many of which are donated to local groups such as the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.

They also have block-of-the-months projects, raffle quilts and all sorts of other activities. Membership in the guild provides an opportunity for quilters to exchange ideas and information and to enjoy the fellowship of quilting together.

The exhibit runs from January 18 to February 27 in the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design’s main gallery located at 322 Charlotte Street in Sydney.
