I have been making things out of wood since I was six years old and somebody gave me a jackknife, but it is only since 1988 I have been selling them.  Since 1997 I have been supporting myself solely by woodworking.  I like to take a piece of wood and make something that shows the beauty that grew there, preferably something that is also useful in some way.  When people ask me, `Did you make this?` I often answer something like, `Yes, I carved it, but the tree spent longer on it than I did.`

About the Art

I make and sell more wooden spoons than any other article because so many people have a use for them.  I also make bowls, spoon holders, stools, coat hooks, benches, and occasionally just sculpture.  I make anything that I think of when looking at pieces of wood, if I get the time to do it.

For spoons, I use hardwood:  beech, maple, birch, apple, saskatoon, hop-hornbeam, plum, etc.  Some of the wood comes from my firewood, some I cut from my own property near Whycocomagh, sometimes people give me pieces.  I like to have a variety and I am willing to try almost any kind that seems like it might work.

I am usually at my workshop most days but if you would like to visit, please phone ahead or email for directions. I am at 468 Roseburn Road (called Soapstone-Roseburn Road on the road sign). Its a bit off the beaten path so please be sure to contact me for directions in advance of your visit or inquire of local people.
