Shari MacLeod

I grew up surrounded by a family full of skilled craftsmen. Quilters, rug hookers, painters, furniture makers and house builders, they provide inspiration through their beautiful homes and ingenuity in the work they`ve created. It was only natural to end up focused on creating work with my hands. I started making baskets with a class at the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design in 1999 and it has been a source of great enjoyment and challenge. 

About the Art

For many years gardening and working in that industry was my creative outlet and still influences my use of color and texture. I weave traditional and contemporary baskets primarily from reed that I hand dye. All of my pieces are shaped by hand  which keeps me focused on the construction techniques as well as the artistic aspects of weaving. I like the challenge of incorporting gathered materials from plants to stones in my baskets and use these materials as inspiration for new weaving projects.

Studio

The studio is open mid June to mid October by chance or appointment.
The studio is on highway 312 north of the Englishtown Ferry approximately 6km on the water side. If travelling from Ingonish, continue just past the turn off for the St. Ann's loop and look for the studio on your left.
